Introduction

Introduction to Kangleipak (Manipur)

Kangleipak (Manipur) was a sovereign monarchy for many years, situated between latitude 24°44’N and longitude 93°58’E.
It is bordered by Myanmar to the east and south, Nagaland to the north, Assam to the west, and Mizoram to the southwest.

In 1891, after being defeated by the British Empire, Manipur became a protectorate under British rule for 56 years, although the king retained his position. On August 14, 1947, Manipur regained its independence. However, on October 15, 1949, the Indian Army forcibly annexed Manipur through aggression, establishing it as a colony of India. In response to various independence movements within Manipur, draconian laws such as the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) were imposed, leading to years of routine harassment, oppression, arrests, and killings under military rule.

The capital valley of Manipur is located in the state’s centre at 790 meters above sea level. In comparison, the surrounding hills reach altitudes of up to 2,994 meters. The valley is encircled by nine hill ranges, creating a diverse landscape of hills and troughs.

Manipur has a population of around 3 million people, comprising several communities, including the Anal, Aimol, Angami, Chiru, Chothe, Gangte, Hmar, Kabui (Zemi, Liangmai, Rongmei), Kharam, Koireng, Kom, Lamkang, Lushai, Mao, Maram, Maring, Meetei, Meetei-Pangal, Monsang, Moyon, Paite, Poumai, Purum, Ralte, Sema, Simte, Suhte, Tangkhul, Tarao, Thadou, Thangal, Vaiphei, Zou, and others. Each community has its language, traditions, and unique culture.

Meetei-lon serves as the lingua franca for communication among all communities. Imphal, the capital city, is also a major trading centre.
